Inside ITU

While the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Series concluded in September, action has anything but slowed for the year with the 2015 Sardegna ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships and Cozumel World Cup recently contested. ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado was in attendance in Italy to cheer on athletes and hold various meetings over the weekend of events that saw ITU’s multisport discipline of swim, mountain bike, and cross country run contested.

Marisol also recently met with IOC President Thomas Bach to discuss preparations for the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Olympic Agenda 2020, as well as attended the 2015 TV Sport Awards in Monaco upon invitation by International Sports Broadcasting’s Manolo Romero. Marisol also met for the Council Meeting for the International Master Games Association in Nice, France. This week in her native Spain, as a recipient of the highest order of the Real Orden del Merito Deportivo, Marisol joined this year’s celebration to welcome the most recent members of the distinguished honour.

ITU member National Federations recently elected Barry Siff of the United States to serve as member of the Executive Board. The election comes after Siff served as a pro tem Board member in 2015.

During the Congress, several additions to ITU Committees were also made. Antonio Alarco (MEX), Alan Beckford (JAM) and Werner Taveirne (BEL) were elected to serve on the Audit Committee, while David Ferrier (AUS) will join the Constitution Committee and Brian Hinton (AUS) was re-elected to the Multisport Committee. Kathleen Smet (BEL) will now also serve on the Women’s Committee.

During this year’s Congress, it was announced that the 2016 Congress will take place in early December in Madrid.

For most elite triathletes competing in ITU races, it’s the dream of competing in the Olympic Games that fuels them on. However, lack of funding, training facilities and knowledge can hinder even the most talented athletes from reaching such goals. For that reason, ITU created a number of development projects aimed to help promising triathletes to reach their Olympic goals.

One of these projects is Team ITU, which aims to provide support, resources and expertise to athletes from emerging/developing National Federations with the potential to compete at Rio 2016 and to compete at a World Cup level

The most recent Team ITU project was held in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary during the ITU’s longest standing World Cup race in ITU history. While 21 athletes applied for the program, ultimately nine were selected to participate in the project. Of those selected, three took part for the first time: Abdulla Attiya of Bahrain, Shen Yen Hsieh of Taiwan and Matthew Wright of Barbados. Click here for the full story.

ITU presented at the IPC VISTA Scientific Conference the progress on the implementation of a sport specific classification system for Paratriathlon, striving for meeting the standards defined by the IPC Classification Code. The development of an evidence-based classification system has been one of the priorities in ITU since it was accepted into the Paralympic Programme in December 2010. A research working group has taken the lead since 2012 to design the methodologies to assess athletes with physical impairments according to their activity limitation in the sport of triathlon.

ITU would like to congratulate Japanese Triathlon Union President Mitsuhide Ide on his recent appointment as Japan’s Minister of Justice. Ide has twice served as the Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary for Japan and has been involved in the triathlon community for more than 20 years.

Spanish speedster Mario Mola, who was recently named recently proclaimed runner-up in the World Series, on Monday received the bronze medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit at the hands of Miguel Cardenal, president of the Superior Council of Sports (CSD).

The Agencia Española de Protección de la Salud en el Deporte recently created a new website on antidoping issues in Spanish for all athletes and support personnel from Spain and Latinoamerican countries. The website was designed in coordination with WADA and iNADO to make it easier for Spanish speakers to access information and educational programas about preventing doping in sport. Please share this new website with your athletes and coaches.
