Remembering Laurent Vidal: The international triathlon community recently lost an incredible member of its community with the passing of Laurent Vidal.
Vidal was a two-time Olympian, competing at both the Beijing and London Olympic Games, finishing fifth in 2012. A multi-time World Triathlon Series & World Cup medallist, Vidal was a steadfast force in men’s ITU racing until he retired in 2014 after suffering a cardiopulmonary arrest.

While his racing career was cut short, Vidal carried his passion for triathlon into coaching as the coach of fiancée Andrea Hewitt, as well as several top French athletes. He also stepped into the role as the Athlete Representative on the ITU Executive Board.

Following his passing and the horrific events that passed in Paris last weekend, ITU stands united behind our French Federation in this tragic time.

INSIDE ITU
President and IOC Member Marisol Casado recently traveled to Algeria for the nation’s first ever triathlon Constitution Assembly, where she was hosted by IOC Honourary Member and FINA Honourary Life President Mustapha Larfaoui. There, Casado and Larfaoui, together with ITU Executive Board Member and African Triathlon Union President Ahmed Nasser and representatives from the Algerian National Olympic Committee, laid plans to create a triathlon Algerian National Federation.

Cuba’s capital will host the second edition of the Habana ITU Long Distance Triathlon Series and the Iberoamerican Championships on 13-14 February 2016, an event that will serve as a great promotion for the sport in the country. Last weekend, Casado was in Cuba at a press conference to promote the race, during which she said, “Cuba “is doing great things to grow triathlon and organize more events”. ITU PRESIDENT STANDS FOR GENDER BALANCE

At the recent IOC Women in Sports Commission, ITU President Marisol Casado, the only female International Federation President of a summer sport on the Olympic programme, took the floor to ask the IOC President for help in implementing gender equality as a good governance issue within the Olympic family. The Commission supported Casado’s position, and Bach agreed to address the issue as a priority at the IF Forum, which was also taking place throughout the week in Lausanne.

The Commission kicked off a week of meetings for ITU at the SportAccord International Federation Forum, during which it was decided to merge the SportAccord Council and the SportAccord Convention into one body. Casado was joined by ITU Director General Antonio Arimany and ITU Sport Director Gergely Markus at the forum. Arimany presented on the work International Federations are conducting in conjunction with the IOC to prepare guidelines that aim to prevent the manipulation of competition. The presentation was part of a review of good governance, which included approaches to transparent operations and coordinated efforts in relations to difficult ethical situations and illegal betting.
